CATEGORIA MEN WOMEN

Sestriere 5/6 dicember 1998

GO! GO!

On the 5th December 1998 on the Kandhar Slalom piste in Sestriere starts the first big adventure of the Carving Cup - FIS experimental. It is the evolution of a sport event that "Sciare" magazine invented in 1996 to stand up for carving's cause and introduce all its aspects to the keen skier disoriented by the technical generation change. Everything is ready. Not only the track but also an imposing village named Omnitel Ski Tour where the best ski firms were there with their stands to let test their new equipment. The start at 17:00 under an artificial lighting system which floodlighted last year the Ski Alpine World Championship. A great challenge between the Austrian Ignaz Ganhal and the Italian Stefano Mantegazza is expected. But here there is a new formula to underline: time divided (:) points and no longer minimum time. After two qualifying runs with 100 athletes and the semifinals with the first 30 Attilio Barcella wins the final run with the best 10 as well as Laura Gianera in the female category. For the teams' category wins Head with Ganhal, Fuchs and Tschofen while Rossignol thanks to Boselli's second placement overcomes the Carving Team Italy captained by Michele Fontana. The ice has been broken. The new competition show together with the Omnitel Ski Tour goes to Madonna di Campiglio.
